I can’t wait to discover the next thing on my path.

Trusting God isn’t easy for a girl like me who is always looking forward to the next thing.

Anxious for The Next Thing

I can’t wait for Friday, till summer starts, to go on vacation, for the weekend, until Christmas. I’ve wanted to know where I’ll go to college, what I’ll do work, whether I’m having a boy or a girl, what dress I’ll wear. I’m anxious for the grass seed to take root, for the leaves to fall so I can rake them up, for my hair to be cut, for the wrapped gift to be opened, for construction to be finished. Next, next, next…

If you are anything like me, you will appreciate this prayer by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

Patient Trust

Above all, trust in the slow work of God.
We are quite naturally impatient in everything
to reach the end without delay.
We should like to skip the intermediate stages.
We are impatient of being on the way to something
unknown, something new.
And yet it is the law of all progress
that it is made by passing through
some stages of instability—
and that it may take a very long time.

And so I think it is with you;
your ideas mature gradually—let them grow,
let them shape themselves, without undue haste.
Don’t try to force them on,
as though you could be today what time
(that is to say, grace and circumstances
acting on your own good will)
will make of you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new spirit
gradually forming within you will be.
Give Our Lord the benefit of believing
that his hand is leading you,
and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself
in suspense and incomplete.

Yearning for Heaven

Ultimately, maybe we are excited for heaven. We can’t wait to be with God fully. Did you know that your capacity for desire is infinite?! And only God, who is infinite being himself can satisfy that. Yet, right now we have a taste of God in pieces. We are eager for the resurrection. Eager for heaven. I can’t wait. I’m itching for what is next. I can’t wait… but I will. I will trust God.
